OK, lately I saw a couple of threads on this forum reporting problems with high CPU and/or memory usage. Naturally, this can be caused by a multitude of reasons and usually requires investigation. I decided to post a couple of common reasons and solutions here (this was written with Plesk 11 for Linux in mind, but may be applicable to other versions and products as well, YMMV however).
jQuery Word/Character Counter
Just a quick jQuery post that calculates the number of words/characters in a form input field. Needed one of these recently for a work project and its really easily to implement and works like a charm
Plesk Checking to see if you have been attacked / infected
So you have patched your server, the hacker can’t get in again – so now we need to tidy up any files which may have been added. In my case I found 13 rogue perl scripts within cgi-bin folder of different domains. Each file had a random filename eg. motherboard.pl / preconnective.pl / etc. and contained surprisingly well documented code (for a trojan!) even telling me its origin on the first line “#part of the Gootkit ddos system“.
