Before proceeding, please understand that use of our DNS system MUST be voluntary. Due to the techniques we use to circumvent blocks, configuring BlockAid on someone else’s computer, without their permission, is technically illegal. You have been warned.

Instructions

Before you begin, it is advisable that you note down your current DNS server addresses, should you need to revert back to them. If your computer is set to obtain them automatically, you can probably skip this step.

Windows Vista/7

1. Go to your computer’s Control Panel and select ‘Network and Internet’ and then ‘Network and Sharing Center.’
2. Click ‘Change adapter settings’ (or ‘Manage network connections’ in Vista) from the left pane and select the adapter for your current connection (right-click and select properties).
3. Choose ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’ and then click ‘Properties.’
4. Click ‘Advanced’ and then select the ‘DNS’ tab from the top.
5. Click ‘Add’ and enter our primary server IP and again click ‘Add.’ Do the same for the Secondary IP, making sure they are in the correct order (primary at the top).
6. Click ‘Ok’ to confirm the settings at each of the windows. You may need to restart your connection for it to take affect.

You can reverse the change by repeating steps 1-3 and selecting the ‘Obtain DNS server address automatically’ radio button.

Windows XP

1. From the Start Menu open your Control Panel and double click ‘Network Connections.’
2. Right click the adapter you are using to connect to the internet (LAN or WiFi) and select ‘Properties.’
3. Scroll to ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ and select it.
4. Click the ‘Properties’ button below.
5. At the bottom select the radio button next to ‘Use the following DNS server addresses.’
6. Enter the address of the servers making sure the primary server is first.
7. Click ‘Ok’ to confirm the changes. You may need to restart to begin using the new DNS servers.

You can reverse the change by repeating steps 1-4 and selecting the ‘Obtain DNS server address automatically’ radio button.

Mac OSX

1. Open up ‘System Preferences’ by selecting it from the ‘Apple Menu.’
2. Click ‘Network’ and make sure that the lock icon is in unlocked position (if it isn’t, select it and enter the administrators password).
3. Select the connection from the left pane for which you would like to configure BlockAid on and click ‘Advanced.’
4. Select the ‘DNS’ tab.
5. Click ‘+’ and add our IP addresses, making sure that the Primary IP appears at the top of the list.
6. Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘Ok.’

You can reverse the change by repeating steps 1-4, selecting the IP addresses one by one and clicking ‘-’ to remove.

Linux

If you’re using linux, then we assume you already know how to change your DNS settings and if you don’t, that you have probably started to Google it already.

Status

You can test whether you are using BlockAid by visiting http://status.block.aid (.aid is a TLD we made up) in your browser. If you can access the page, then the configuration was successful.

We strongly suggest that after successfully configuring your computer to use BlockAid you add the status page to your hosts file. If the whole system were to ever go down then you will be able to find an update there.

Hosts file location

Locate the file according to your Operating system using the information above. Add the following information to the bottom and save it.

We also advise that you install a FireFox plugin called AlertBox and setup an alert for the status page, to be checked once a day. If there are any changes it will then alert you.
